B.A.S.S. Federation Nation Southern Divisional; Manning, South Carolina:
The B.A.S.S. National Federation Nation held a southern divisional qualifying tournament on Santee Cooper Lake in Summerton, South Carolina, Wednesday April 2nd through April 4th, 2008.
It was a new experience for some of the NC B.A.S.S. State team anglers as they had never been on the lake and fished for bass. The team held its own in the competition as they fished against the top anglers from Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Florida, Tennessee, and South Carolina and finished second only to the home team of South Carolina by a mere 10 pounds.
NC B.A.S.S. Federation Nation President and Team Captain Chuck Murray stated he was very proud of the team as they worked hard in practice enduring cold, windy and rainy conditions for three days. Day one’s results showed “practice and team work pays off”. The NC team found itself in third place and three members in the top ten. Phil Bain of Youngsville, NC brought five fish to the scale weighing 18.5 pounds and found himself in second place in the tournament. Mark Robertson of Henderson, NC brought 4 fish to the scale weighing 16.75 pounds good enough for fifth, and Jeff Narron of Sims, NC had a five fish limit weighing 11.75 pounds and 9th place. As a team, NC weighed in 90.5 pounds on day one and found itself in 3rd place and just 9 pounds out of the lead. Team Alabama led day 1.
On day two, the NC team had its largest catch of the tournament bringing 135 pounds of bass to the scales. Jeff Hager of Alexis, NC brought 5 bass to the scales weighing an impressive 22.5 pounds, Patrick Tierney of Denver, NC brought in 5 bass weighing 21.25 pounds, Jeff Narron brought in 5 bass weighing 19 pounds, and Phil Bain had 5 weighing 17 pounds. At the end of day two, the NC team moved up to second place overall and just 6.5 pounds from winning the grand prize, a brand new Skeeter boat valued nearly $30,000. Home team South Carolina would hold a slim lead after day two.
Out of 84 anglers vying to advance to the BASS Federation Nation Championship, the North Carolina Team had 6 top twenty finishers. They were Jeff Hager 4th, Phil Bain 5th, Jeff Narron 10th, Bruce Eskow 15th, Tracy McCready 16th, and Mark Robertson 20th.
