Hello fishing fans, my name is Matt Deese. I’m originally from Gastonia, NC but call Raleigh, NC home. I’d say Falls Lake is definitely my “home lake,” but I enjoy fishing all the lakes in the Triangle (Falls, Jordan, Shearon Harris, Kerr, Gaston). I’m a graduate of North Carolina State University and am a huge Wolfpack supporter. While NC State may struggle in some sports, they rule the NCAA collegiate fishing tournament series. That’s all that matters…right?
After graduating from NC State with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Computer Engineering, I went to work for a large defense contractor specializing in fire-control radar systems. Believe it or not, I went back to school to obtain a graduate certificate in Systems Engineering focused on large-scale programs within the DoD. I now work for a small, veteran-owned defense contractor specializing in integrated bridge systems (IBS) for marine platforms. I must say it’s a cool job and I’m lucky that I get to play on boats all the time.
Anyway, I’m an avid fisherman and generally love the outdoors. I take my dog Jake with me every chance I get; he’s quite the fishing companion. While I do fish tournaments, I really enjoy just getting out on Falls Lake and trying to learn more about this great fishery. It can be very rewarding at times and very humbling at others.
My father got me interested in fishing at a very young age when we would troll around Lake Wylie and Lake Hartwell for crappie. I even remember carp fishing on small lakes, when my dad would take my brother and I with him for those 10-12 hours fishing days trying to win those one-hour pots. Without a doubt, my father has been a huge influence in every aspect of my life but I’ll never forget those times we’ve spent on the water. I am very blessed to continue to have opportunities to enjoy time with Dad, as we both remain avid anglers. Looking back on all the times we’ve shared as father and son, I would highly recommend taking the time to teach a kid to fish. It will be rewarding for both of you.
With that said, I hope you enjoy my blog. I’ll try to post my fishing adventures and stories on here when I get back from my weekly fishing trips. I’m sure my wife will be thrilled that I have something else fishing-related to occupy my time (hence the title of my blog).
